Hotel 28 Myeongdong

Hotel 28 Myeongdong

Seoul, South Korea

A boutique property with a cinematic theme, Hotel 28 is a sleek, design-led hotel with a comfortable, contemporary style. The hotel is owned by Korean actor Yeong-gyun Shin and uses film projections, stills and movie memorabilia to give it a distinctive style.

The black-and-gold decor of the reception area is reminiscent of classic movie houses, while on the first floor a black-and-white movie projection adds to the theme. The effect is more muted in the 83 guest rooms, which have a sleek, contemporary style and subtle nods to the cinematic theme with stills from classic Korean movies on the walls and Hollywood dressing-room-style lighting around the mirrors.

There’s a rooftop bar and garden, a library and small gym, while good Korean food is served in the restaurant, Wolhyang.

Located in the heart of the lively Myeongdong district, you’ll find plenty of bars, restaurants and shops in the surrounding streets and it’s only a short walk to the nearest metro station.

OUR OPINION:

This is one of the few properties in Korea that can honestly be referred to as boutique. The location in central Myeongdong affords great access to bars and restaurants, and the cinema theme is tastefully done.

Rooms

All the rooms are tastefully designed in a sleek contemporary style and feature subtle, cinema-themed detailing such as dressing-room-style lighting flanking the mirrors and black-and-white movie stills above the beds. Deluxe rooms are slightly larger than the standard rooms and have upgraded furniture. All rooms have Wi-Fi, coffee machines, flat-screen TVs and air conditioning.

Location

The hotel is located right at the heart of Myeongdong, a lively part of the city with plenty of department stores, restaurants and bars. There’s a metro station located a few minutes’ walk away, which offers direct access to Seoul station, and it’s only a short walk to the Cheonggyecheon stream, a pedestrian-only thoroughfare below street level that’s ideal for an evening stroll.

Food and drink

A continental breakfast buffet is served in the hotel restaurant, Wolhyang, which offers a range of classic Korean dishes for lunch and dinner. We recommend booking a table for dinner at check in if you plan to dine here. The rooftop bar is tranquil, despite the city bustle below, and offers great city views on a clear day.

Facilities and activities

The property’s library stocks a few books as well as a collection of film memorabilia, and provides a peaceful space for catching up on emails. The small gym features several cardio machines as well as free weights, while the founder’s gallery has an archive exhibition of owner Yeong-gyun Shin’s work. There’s also a coin laundry on the 7th floor.
